How is A.I. Disrupting Education?

Beckett Growney, Staff Writer

AI intelligence has affected many different aspects of education, good and bad. For example, one model of AI intelligence is ChatGPT. ChatGPT is a website that writes articles for you. For example, a person using the website can write a topic and ChatGPT can create an article for it. I believe that artificial intelligence is disrupting education by giving students cheat codes to get out of doing work.

The use of artificial intelligence doesn’t just affect students, but it also affects teachers too!Over one in four teachers in a recent Study.com survey say they have caught students cheating by using ChatGPT. If you would like to learn more about the study, click here

Sasha Dmitriev , a 7th grade student at MCDS, has never used ChatGPT.  “It can be positive if you’re running out of time to write an article, and need to get it done to get a good grade on the assignment,” Dmitriev said, “but I also think it can be negative. For example, in many views of teachers, using ChatGPT would most definitely be considered cheating because the website is writing it for you, implying that you’re putting no thought or work into the assignment.”

There are many questions on how teachers and schools should approach artificial intelligence tools, like ChatGPT.  I think schools should allow it once in a while not only giving students and themselves a minor break, but also creating a learning opportunity from using ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is only one of many websites that can help students cheat on their work; there are many other websites that will write articles for you.  This can cause students to lose the opportunity to have a proper education.
